Paris Street Style

Ah, those Parisian women - the ones who manage to stay effortlessly and timelessly chic. The Paris Street Style Guide To Effortless Chic gives some handy advice when it comes to adopting the French woman's style sensibility.  Luckily I'm here to give you the Cliff Notes version!

So without further ado, here are 5 rules you should have when dressing yourself:

#1.  Know your assets.  Know which parts of your body you feel good about, and adapt the styles you want to your body type.  Before you jump on a trend bandwagon, make sure it's a trend you feel comfortable wearing.

#2.  Take risks.  Where's the fun in fashion if you can't try new things?  While it's great to have a sense of your own personal style, be open to mixing new and unexpected elements into your wardrobe.  Even something as simple as a pair of bright red flats works as a way to spice up a predominantly neutral wardrobe.  Full disclosure:  I'm the first one to admit my tendency to avoid prints like leopard, etc.  I'm working on it!

#3.  Don't forget the power of accessories.  Some times we get so caught up in putting together an outfit, we forget how a simple necklace, belt or scarf can drastically change it.  Keeping an arsenal of accessories is a budget-friendly way to class up your style and re-work old pieces into new outfits.

#4.  Cheap shoes are unforgivable. If there's one thing not to skip on, it's shoes.  There is a distinct difference between cheap leather and real leather, and time will reveal this difference.  I'm still one to purchase cheap flats from a Target or DSW, but I'll also spend more on shoes that will last more than one season (more on this below).

#5.  "As in fashion, so in life".  Like our dearest friends, there are certain pieces of clothing that are always there for us in times of distress.  Be willing to invest in the wardrobe staples that will never go out of style.  These staples are...wait for it, wait for it:

trench coat, pea coat, leather boot, leather jacket, white button down, cashmere sweater, chinos
